In a Nutshell: The Immigrant (2013)

The Immigrant. Hmmm, I’m not sure how I feel about it but I don’t think I dislike it.

It tells the story of Polish immigrant Ewa Cybulska (Marion Cotillard) who is about to be deported when Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix) preys on the situation and draws her into the dark world of vaudeville and prostitution. Complicating matters is Orlando the Magician/Emil (Jeremy Renner doing some brilliant work) who is just as seedy as Bruno. Ewa is stuck in the middle of what becomes a weird love triangle with no friends or family for support (I’m never convinced there is genuine love. They just play tug-of-war with her for their own gain. But you decide).

You’ve definitely got to be in the mood for this one. It is dark and weird (and quite creepy) yet interesting with superb acting from the three leads.

    1. Ah! That’s it! I think that’s why I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. You have a point there – the reason I didn’t dislike it was because of the whole feel and cinematography etc. But I can’t convincingly say “it was great”. Sometimes one just needs some enlightenment from fellow bloggers! Thanks!

Thoughts anyone?
