2 Reel Quirky Cats Collaboration

Kelly’s Heroes (2 Reel Quirky Cats August (P)review)

(A Random Trailer (P)review)

Kelly’s Heroes (1970). One of those I used to watch on Super 8. I’ve also added the DVD to my collection. In all honesty, I haven’t watched it for years. But my oh my the trailer wants me to just drop everything and watch the movie…right now! It is just awesome. Of course Donald Sutherland‘s Oddball is the undisputed star of the show. In my opinion anyway.

Here’s the trailer…I’ll carry on once you’ve watched it:

So? What did you think? Tempted to watch the movie? I hope so.

The story is pretty much about Kelly (Clint Eastwood) and his guys trying to move through/behind enemy lines (while remaining undetected by their own) to “retrieve” a stash of gold bars. And what a fun journey it is.

Interesting is (and I never knew this until getting ready for this post) that Kelly’s Heroes is based on true events which supposedly went into the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest robbery in the 60s. Not sure how accurate this is…but hey.

The ensemble work so well. Each one perfectly complements the other. They include Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland (but you knew that), Don Rickles, Carroll O’Connor and a whole lot more. Great movie. And the trailer does it justice.

Escape to Victory (2 Reel Quirky Cats July (P)review)

(A Random Trailer (P)review)

Escape_to_Victory_FullPoster

I’d never heard of this one before (oh, how I love the world of blogging…so many movies to keep that To Watch list growing by about 10 for every 1 I manage to watch. Yes…I’m looking at you Realweegiemidget, amongst others).

And wow…Sylvester Stallone was that young? Michael Caine too (the voice has never changed…recognisable anywhere of course). And Max von Sydow.

So, here’s the trailer for Escape to Victory (1981) aka Victory:

“Well you must realise, it’s my busy time. Everybody wants to escape in the good weather”. Perfect hook – it got me right away. Sets the scene perfectly and with no further convincing I going to watch this one.

The story? From what I can make out, a group of POWs want to escape (who doesn’t?) and their planned way out is through a most unexpected manner – a soccer match against the Germans. I’m guessing that because it is meant to be a propaganda show in favour of the Germans there’s no way this will be the case. I’ll have to watch and find out though…

Another trailer that appears to do a great job of not giving away the good parts or the whole story – so I hope. It leaves me wanting to find out exactly how this is all going to go down. As for Stallone, I’d forgotten about his looks back in the Rocky days. I quite enjoy the role he has in Escape to Victory (from the snippets that are shown). I’m hoping this is the case. I did do a little reading and discovered that a whole lot of professional and semi-professional soccer players feature too. I’ve also read that Kevin Beattie “plays” Michael Caine‘s legs because of the latter struggling to run.

cropped-cat2Realweegiemidget has watched this one so head over to her place here for a more comprehensive review. We’ll be on Twitter for a chit-chat later today too (@2ReelQuirkyCats).

Oh…I nearly forgot…it is a new theme so we have a new poll…here you go – vote for the one we should review next:

Scream (2 Reel Quirky Cats June (P)review Nr 3 – Poll Winner)

(A Random Trailer (P)review)

Curtains_Scream_2

Scream (1996)…for some reason, this is one of the first movies that came to mind when the 2 Reel Quirky Cats’ “comedy horror” theme came up for this month. I had in my mind that it was funny. But, based on the trailer…it isn’t. Well…there may be a few funny-ish moments. Not really.

The story appears to be that someone is stalking girls who like scary movies. I’m sure there is something linking them all (there has to be doesn’t there?). Maybe they’re all linked to something they did way back when. Most of these 90s movies were like that…weren’t they? And I suspect the killer is someone they all know…someone they somehow wronged. Or, someone who’s jealous of the guys and so stalks the girls. The trailer doesn’t really give much away does it? Just that a bunch of girls are phoned while they are at home at night by some weirdo.

Well, ok…I need to confess. The reason I thought it was a comedy horror (and put it onto our poll) is because…uhm, well, yes…I was thrown out of the cinema way back when it was released. Maybe not thrown out…but close. My friend and I were laughing from the beginning and about 20 minutes in, the teenage couples who were hoping to get cozy started complaining (no point having two silly gals laughing while you’re hoping to have your date hold on to you from fear) and we decided to leave. I’ve never really seen it. I remember it was funny 😉 Going back to the pub where we’d started out before heading to the cinema was more fun (oh, golly, did I say that out loud?) Now it all becomes clear as to why it was a comedy in my opinion.

Our next month’s theme is “War Movies” but because it’s summer up there in the northern part of the globe, we’ll spread our posts out over two months i.e. July and August. Means that down here in the south I can hibernate and keep warm. Or catch up on those movies that I’m just not getting to.

Warm Bodies (2 Reel Quirky Cats June (P)review Nr 2)

(A Random Trailer (P)review)

Curtains_WarmBodies

Warm Bodies (2013) is another one of those movies that would have passed me by – not being a big horror/supernatural fan – this is out of my comfort zone (despite the “He’s Still Dead but He’s Getting Warmer” line being intriguing) . But, it just happened to be on TV. So I watched it. Kinda. I’ve never watched it to the end…well, to the end yes, but I skipped a whole chunk and then watched the last few minutes (not because it was bad, I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind). However, with this trailer, I may just sit myself down and watch the whole movie properly…from beginning to end. A work colleague told me I should – “it is so sweet” he says.

Have a watch:

This trailer has me smiling. It is just too funny. In a cute, silly way. Pretty much the jist of this movie is that R (Nicholas Hoult) starts developing human responses to Julie (Teresa Palmer). It’s a refreshing take on the human/supernatural love story genre. As must be the case, there is a threat from both the humans and other supernatural beings. All par for the course. I think the trailer is well made in that it gives us enough to tempt but doesn’t spoil all the good bits.

I’ve grown fond of Nicholas Hoult since seeing him as Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road (which I’ve reviewed here) and this role suits him too. But can you ever go wrong with John Malkovich? He’s absolutely awesome.

This is a movie with a whole lot of heart (pun intended). I’ll give it a “full” watch soon. Hope the trailer has convinced you too.

Join us again next week for the poll winner of the month…while I think it may not be a pure comedy-horror (horror-comedy)…We’ll have fun anyway.

Uhm…Cockneys vs Zombies (2 Reel Quirky Cats June (P)review Nr 1)

(A Random Trailer (P)review)

Clue_CockneyZombiesFull

So…yes…uhm…well…hmmm….wow….I don’t know how to start this one. Maybe, let me say that collaborating with other bloggers broadens one’s horizons. Firstly, this month’s topic of “Horror Comedy”, selected by our June guest blogger Shanannigans of Reads and Reels, is a genre I’ve never really watched. Secondly, that’s exactly why this blogging community is so awesome…I’m being exposed to movies (and genres) I’ve never even heard of, or, rather, never taken much note of. So, while we’ve giving Shanannigans some time to get her zombies ducks in a row, my collaborator in crime, Realweegiemidget has selected her choice for this topic…tada…Cockneys vs Zombies.

What’s it about? Actually, I don’t know. I wasn’t concentrating on the story. But, I was having a good chuckle throughout the trailer (here I need to tell you that I’m not big into comedy. Even less into horror). Oh my! The two grandad-and-his-walker scene snippets are just something. And, I’ll never think of certain fashion brands the same either 😉 (I need to confess, I’ve picked a slightly different trailer from what Realweegiemidget gave me – just for the grandad parts.)

The British are great at comedy (I need to rephrase my previous comment here to “here I need to tell you that I’m not big into comedy except the wonderful art of British comedy”. The horror comment still stands though) and they might just pull this one off too. In fact, I am quite tempted to watch this one. It looks like good, mindless, non-so-scary fun.

cropped-cat2Head on over to Realweegiemidget Reviews (here) for her take on this comic bit of horror (or is it horrific bit of comedy?) and then join us on Twitter (@2ReelQuirkyCats) for your zombish comments. Have fun! By the way, thanks for broadening my horizons with your selection, Realweegiemidget.

Oh…and, because it’s a new month and so a new genre of reviews we have a poll for you. Vote for your favourite Horror Comedy movie of those we’ve put forward and we’ll tackle that one at the end of the month:

What we 2 Reel Quirky Cats are up to…

Introducing the 2 Reel Quirky Cats
(by me and ad-libbed in bold by Realweegiemidget)

Well, I guess it is about time we reveal what we’re up to. It all started one dark and stormy night one normal afternoon when Realweegiemidget and I happened to be sharing comments around our guilty pleasure confessions We’d previously shared a mutual appreciation of Leonardo DiCaprio (as girls do) But then guilty pleasures are a different matter..). Tentatively at first, testing the embarrassment waters and then more confidently – it dawned on us…we all have those films we watch because…we like them no matter how low the ratings or general opinion. Confessing to liking these films is embarrassing as turning up at a Star Trek convention as Princess Leia.  And after sharing a few of our more obscure guilty pleasures, we found some new films to check out.  Or those actors and actresses we’ll watch in anything, and we mean anything (I am so guilty of that and she’s not the only 1!). We know for a fact you do too. Come on…admit it. You know you want to.

Bring ’em on. All those film previews, be they the oldies or the newbies. Doesn’t matter. We’ll give you the trailer, a wee summary of the plot and a brief review from each of us (which you can find both here and over on Realweegiemidget‘s blog via links we’ll conveniently provide). We’ll also let you add your two tweet’s worth on Twitter, here.

First under the spotlight on 20th May is RealWeegieMidget‘s choice (with Thoughts all Sorts confessing her guilty pleasure with one of it’s stars in an other guilty pleasures themed review soon. And, if you’ve any film previews you want us to review, send us a comment on our WordPress pages or a direct message.). Here you go:

CurtainsWithCats

Oh? Sorry. We forgot to have someone backstage to open the curtain. Drat. You’ll have to wait a teeny tiny bit longer. Until then, we’ve listed some of our other Guilty Pleasures below…let us know which one we should pick for June or better yet, add your own.

Don’t be self conscious. Don’t feel judged. We’ll share ours so feel free to share yours. Nobody will think any lesser of you. In fact, who doesn’t like some swooning over the films we secretly love?

Hear ye, hear ye!

Behind the curtain there be…

(Shhhhhhhhhhh…)

Guilty pleasures to be found.

The curtain will reveal all soon

but for now all we can say is…

…join RealWeegieMidget and me, Thoughts all Sorts, as we explore the films, actors and actresses we enjoy just…because we can.

The plan is to pick a film, give you the trailer and then a review from each of us (that’s here on WordPress). Then tune in to @2ReelQuirkyCats on Twitter and join in the fun.

First film announcement to follow soon.

Can’t wait to see you all!
